The Other Me is You

Saturday, September 19, 2009

All too often it seems that writing fiction should be easier. After all, laying bare the feelings of our crazed minds is not something that everyone loves to do. Yet  that is precisely what I seem to find easier. To imagine is a probability that is beyond. But to replicate the reality of a conjoined mass of thoughts is easier for me. Everywhere around me, at work and at play, at home and away, people clam into a towering tree of silence, their thoughts wreathed around them funereally, masks of enchantment clouding a desperate wish to live a life they believe they love.

And I see myself a spectator in this throng of nakedly disguised emotions. I can see the longing in a person, the desire of a want that is never to be in another, the desperate bid to be happy in some others, the human need to belong in most of them, the urge, the pity and the pathos all combining. And I can feel it as my own. That is the rub. I know not where I end, and the others begin. I feel like I feel the feelings of the world. And somehow, when I write all this, I know that this is not all mine to write. In a way, I write the other. That other is not me but you.

Material World

Monday, September 14, 2009

Here I was, on the Net, this vast compendium of information. Pages and pages of all the thoughts that passed through minds. Pages of all the information on earth compressed into bit pieces and megabytes. Images of all the pictures that move through our minds. Affixed forever on the white backgrounds of metallic moments. Resting in reams unwritten. Repose for cemeteries of words. Buried in a place that does not exist. This Net. Invisible. But true. An interconnection of an unconnected universe.

And here amidst all the junk, all the garbage, all the wisdom, all the power lies this online experiment. Wikipedia. An encyclopedia. Open to editing. For anyone. The power of all this information. A people movement for the ages. And it was here that I came in search of advertising slogans. For that moment, a chore became a delight. I glanced through all the slogans. Hundreds of them. Cars. Perfumes. Sunglasses. TVs. Burgers. Chicken. Jeans. Beer. Cola. Sweaters. Shampoos. Cameras. Phones. All these things that make our lives. That move our lives. That are our life. We work for these. We live for them. They formed a little poem all by themselves. Here, I didn't have to write them, even. They just arranged themselves into our lives. All I had to do was to cut them to shape the life I know. Like jigsaw puzzles. Anyone ever tried selling life for a song? If my life were to be a slogan, what would it be? What would yours be?

Life fitting into pieces
Cutting into words
Piecing images
Life is business
Life is sell.

Sell. Market. Change. Your life.

An IDEA can change your life-

Boundless

Going beyond the call

It's all within your reach

Listening. Answering

Reach out and touch someone

Your true voice

Your true choice.

Make the most of now...

To be what you are takes nothing. It is our life...

Stay Connected

Express Yourself

Be inspired

Imagine

It's so simple...

Life is. Simpliflying. Mesmerising. Life is all about trying.

Keep exploring

Keep Going

Think Different

See what the future has in store

Turn On The Fun

Life is Fun. Frolic. Pain. Misery. Life is. Boredom and melancholy. We are life.

Who are you?

Where you at?

Where do you want to go today?

Think

It's all inside

The power to be your best

And you're done.

Life though is never done. Whirlwind of changes. Seasoned in time. Fated with destiny.

Because life is not a spectator sport

Because life's complicated enough

For Life Ain't no reason to go anyplace else

So tough, it's beautiful...

Do You Dare?

Just Do It

Live richly

Reach Higher

Don't Give Up a Thing

It's time to fly

Unlock the magic

Why not?

Because I'm worth it.

Because life is worth it.

The world of business. And the world of poetry. Material soul. Who ever said they didn't match?

Memories

Memories. Memories. Memories. All we have. Synapses of cells. Connecting the neurons of what we know with what we don’t know.

My memories. My memories can fill a sieve. I sift through the cells and wander through every little path I know and traversed through these years of life. 30 years they say, is too short a time to live. To understand. To know.

Yet, it is not too short a time to be. To float in the skies for each day of our minds. To grasp the tender weeping willows of pain. To merge our kisses with ice.

Heaven knows not a sweeter pain than sorrow. The hours of happiness are tinged with the bliss of ache. Swift and smooth to endure these last rays of the setting sun. In darkness to walk the rims of an unfinished life.

Seasons dripping like paint down a still easel - Autumn to shed the remorse and regrets of past thoughts -Winter to submerge the icicles of dawn, bitterness of a scream echoing down the valleys and buried dungeons of memories-Spring to counter the promise of darkness-Summer to rain arid the dry mouths of life creeping in. Till the circle turns…and the sieve bends, till the mind can no longer hold and we slip into the last glimpses of memories unfinished.

Self

Monday, September 7, 2009

I woke up to a sea of mirages,
Morning dewed and
Happiness slewed
Through the dense foliage of a mind
That knows not what it seeks.

A desert of waves,
A chasm of moods
That seek their way
Through blind words
That play their tunes
On music that hears it not.

I lost. Miserably.
Despairingly.
Lost the power of love
Lost the laughter of magic
Lost myself.

I lost peace; surrendered to pieces
Thwarted joy and embraced despair

 ........

Yet I know I have not truly lost
That the sea was not an inversion
Of a cruel play of images
Which never fitted into the surface

I had stamped my self
Prodded it with disgust
Loathed it with revulsion
Yet I loved it no less.
Yes, loved it no less.
My self has an other
A beautiful other.

That other is my self.
How much more could I loathe?
How much more could I despise?
Without loving it all the more?
Yes, without loving more.
Within me I am without
And I know what I am without.

Beyond

Sunday, September 6, 2009

Circles of sandpaper trail across
All the pieces of life I own
The yawning gaps of
Churning memories
Leaving their scars
Across the interned
Remains of the soul.

Thousand forms of dusk
Part brittle tender husks
Mellowed in wine of the past
And cherished in the seed of hope
Through the dark jagged river
Flowing green through my mind.

A mind that runs its walk
On avenues of paved desires
Wearing the leaves of experience
With disdain and despair

Yet casting a net of light
Gentle and masked
Behind these caves of dark
Are all the suns of our lives
Shadows of laughter
Crystal constellations of warmth
Reminding me through
Through and through
That life is
Beyond the mind
Beyond the soul
Beyond.

Movement

Thursday, September 3, 2009

It was a small night. Whispers of a moon passed her path. Above, the stars gentle as they were, seemed too far away. She didn't know why she was walking. Or where. It seemed a world away from the lights of the city she had grown up in. Yet, here she was. The lanterns of the resort seemed further away now. The laughter there aching away into a vast emptiness. The rustling of the leaves no longer scared her. Instead, she oddly felt comforted. She welcomed the non-beingness of human beings.

All too long in her life, for too too long she had awakened her life to death. To the fakeness of living. She didn't know if this walking would lead towards life.Perhaps, life itself didn't exist except in the mind. It didn't in her mind anyway. She had had it. A life of love, hate, anger, despair. Tiredness. For what all of it? To achieve some normalcy? It didn't seem right - this normalcy that others crave was to her just an invitation to surrender. She preferred not surrender - she wanted to fight the paths that others seemed to think was destined for her. Life passed before her, kissing her toes. A childhood where nothing exceptional happened except people dying. First her grandmother. Then her brother. Ouch, that had hurt. But not hard enough. It was more a stunned disbelief. That bugger was lucky enough to get away with it. But other times it was a sense of what if. A remorseless adolescence. Turns and twists of weird friendships. None aching their sense on the heart long enough. And then, boy, you had to grow up. Big time.

A different country gave her happiness. For a while. She had lost and gained. Again. And again. Till she thought she had no more to lose. Nothing to gain. Her life was defined by another soul. Mating its path into hers. Leaves touch her. Ah, touch, how she had longed for it all her life. The sweet drooping caress of a loved one. Slender roses of showered kisses. Life gave too much of it though. It was a sickening sweet that condenses those moments to a melted memory. The waves were closer to her now. Seductive. Calling. Feet wet. Toes trickling the sand. She had thought love was to keep. But its cobwebs were all that were left. Dancing waves now passed her ankles. The moon still looked just the same. The stars just the same.

Only her life was changing. And that was how it always was. It is always your life that you change. Conversations merged. People shouted in her mind. All those passions. All those logical reasonings. Nurturing a love she had had invited her to surrender. But that love had surrendered to other. Torn to shreds, she knew she couldn't connect her mind to that wonderful space between thoughts. Those touches that connect. If life taught her that she ought to be logical, and practical, she was. Surrender. Surrender. Yeah, this was practical. Good bye cold ice memory wrapped in moth balls that consume themselves by the flame that consumes her. Upto her neck now. Her feet no longer touching ground. Water water water. She didn't feel free. Nor happy. Just dead. Just dead when the last wave passed over and water sucked her last breath. She had surrendered. And the rest was all a sea that remained. The moon was just the same. The stars just the same. Just.

Rage

Wednesday, September 2, 2009

Set to carve a wave
I chose a sickle
The harsh metal cruel to touch
Glinting in the razor sun
The mask eye of wisdom drawn

Clasped I the sickle
Curvaceous wood embers
Slanting against withered skin

The wave rose
Rose to the heights of
the mind's sky

The sickle slashed the air
Swooped down smiling at the end
The wave faltered trembled
Skin splashed salt
The heavens shook in sight

The sickle swung
The wave rose
The twain met

I lived.
The sickle shivered.
The wave lay cut.
Water flowing at my feet.
Ego. Rage. Peace.

Finding Magic

Saturday, August 22, 2009

Is not an illusion. Is not a reality. Is not a tempestous plunge into fantasy. What is Magic? Wandering through London, I thought of this. The noises of the streets blending into a headache. A jetlag that carved a sword through my tiredness. A myriad number of people I cared not to meet and one I did want to meet. The Saturday night of fake artificiality that gorged itself for me on to absolute boredom. Where was Magic?

Would it on the Thames? On the HMS Belfast? At Southwark Cathedral? At Buckhingam? At Windsor? It wasn't there. It wasn't there at the British Library either. Magic was not on view there at the Globe or the Tate.

Magic flew around me. I did not see. Magic hugged me. I couldn't feel it. I saw it then. Magic doesn't exist.

On a pale evening light when the sun was close to dimming down the day, when I realized that Magic doesn't exist, only then Magic became real. I knew then that most travel writing is superflous - we can't really feel the moment till we are out of it. All we are doing till then is just gawking at spectacles, and buildings, at monuments enough to forget the moments. Then later we collect them in our minds, turn them over from all the corners it has gathered, and wrapped in the past's comfortable presence, we feel, oh wow, how magical was that.

Is all magic just that? No. But Magic doesn't exist until we deny it.

Just a lift

Thursday, August 6, 2009

The elevator door closed with a shut. He stepped inside. Gold rimmed the walls. The carpet was slightly stained. He glanced down, wondering how many people must have walked on it, stepped on it, waited on it. "Like me," he thought wryly.

39. 38. 37. 36. The doors swung open on 35. For a moment, he thought there was no one there. Then he saw him - in this 60s perhaps, with a briefcase, the blue shirt, the suit, the polished boots. How he wished. Never mind, that is not a wish, he admonished himself. The man stepped inside, looking at the monitor inside that displayed news. He knew he wasn't even in the man's periphery. He wondered what he would have to do to get his attention. Strip naked perhaps, he smiled.

30, 29, 28. The doors swung again. This time a woman. Petite, trim with a leopard print purse. An Elizabeth Arden perfume sunk into the gold rimmed walls. 26, 25, 24, 23. There were no one else apparently standing on those lonely corridors, waiting for this steel mesh to grab them from the world they thought they belonged to. Faster and faster, they were almost at 15. The man in the suit glanced at the woman. Smiled. The woman looked at him an instant. No impression there. The news monitor fascinated her more. He laughed. People were so strange so inexplicable, so burdened, so frivolous, so utterly tiresome.

10, 9, 8. Clinton had made a surprise visit to North Korea. The Bill that is. Did he embarass Hillary, the screen asked. 7, 6, 5. He thought about it for a moment. Old Bill. Doing what Old Bill always did - loving the limelight, the chivalrous knight to the ladies' rescue, the dashing Bond, the Bill who all women loved, and who all men must probably hate. The lady in front was impatient. Glancing at her watch. The man with the briefcase seemed more content. He tapped his feet. No one turned. 3, 2, 1. His ears screamed from the pressure.

The doors swung open. He stood there for a moment, waiting for the lady to exit. He didn't have to wait long. She swooped bye, heels clicking, on her way to whatever it was that must have been so important as to make 50 seconds in an elevator an unendurable torture. The man with the briefcase walked out more slowly. Head down. Weighed down by the billions he had made that day.

And he? I walked out. I had chosen. My black shadow a ripple on the floor, pushing my cart with all the other souls I had collected through a morning's work. Now where did that lady go?

Trap

Tuesday, August 4, 2009

A myriad number of emotions carve through my surface. I am a seething bundle of collapsed energy. Even as I write this, I wonder at the sense in writing, in the mess of the world that we trap our mind in. A friend said my writing is "Kafka-esque." It amuses me, that word.

I know not who Kafka was except that it sounds nice to sit in some literary pub in London, and nod understandingly when his name is mentioned. My sheer ignorance of the world, its colorful tapestry of movement, form and words is immense. Music I know not. Literature I remember not. Architecture I understand not. And the sheer consumer branding of materialism that others derive their identification from - oh look, Harley! Coke! Levis! Tommy Hilfiger! Delsey!

------------------------

Cast the Levis,
Catch the Coke addiction

------------------------

Lug the Delsey
Bite the Godiva melt

This is by far the crappiest post on this blog. But sometimes we need the crap, the dirt, the mud, to jolt us out the insane reality we believe our life is and realize just for a moment how painful happiness can be in the face of fleet-footed Time.

End of Hope Beginning in End

Sunday, July 12, 2009

It was a quiet sky. The rages of purple, orange and gold that had slashed the sky just moments before were now gone. Disappeared like a breath of cloud into the last rays. The sun had long gone. I stood for a while watching the sun. He had been oppressive today. Harsh, unrelenting with a fierce wrenching swagger to his usual moodiness. I didn’t like the sun. Not since that day when he tore the insides of my thoughts and echoed his laughter to the skies. It was so long ago. All so long ago.

We were alone then. Just me and the sun. I thought I loved him. How intensely we love. How intensely we hate. How intensely we hallucinate in the belief that both exist. Every day was a greeting to the sky. Blue, beckoning oceans of warmth that soaked through the deliciousness of being in love. He was kinder then, warm without being suffocating. Below us the universe stretched his arms wide. We embraced it. Moved through the vast swathes of a glorious viviscience. There was so much to see! So many worlds to clasp. We travelled far, more than all the years you can count. My sun was my guardian at that time, guiding me through the harsher climes when I gasped for breath, and struggled to see. We thought we knew each other and knew the paths our lives would take. “Imagine,” he would say, beckoning in the golden light. “Imagine, we are so young, and so much to live.” “I know,” I smiled, my pale arms fading in his glow. “We have only our imagination as our life,” I said. He looked at me for a moment, not understanding, and to tell you the truth, neither did I. Perhaps it changed at that moment. Or perhaps it didn’t. I will never know. But we were consumed by a different pain – the pain of knowing that we would never know each other. Live each other. Imagine. Imagine. Imagination was all our life. It began with clouds of gentle doubt, each of us moving away and apart as we grappled with our thoughts, different and ebbing, flowing into different directions. And then it just sutured wide, a split into a chasm of chaos.

I began to wane. Each turn of the sky brought me a different color, a new mood. I didn’t know I was changing. I didn’t know if I even liked the change. All I knew was that every day I lost a piece of myself. My sun too didn’t remain the same. Unlike me, though the sameness was his difference. What I lost he gained. He turned his bitterness into a pulverizing passion, a fire that quenched his thirst to be the most ‘beautiful one out there.’ His words, not mine. The passion burned. He was truly beautiful. But the old sky turned her clouds away from him. “He scalds my kids,” she complained. I begged him. Pleaded, and entreated him to retreat. Cast away that anger. To rule the world and not ruin. But he didn’t. “Ruin is in ourselves anyway,” he would say with a smile that made me think of the old days when we believed in running the world, in rejoicing, in rewards that came that need not ever be bought. We melted away. How you might ask? What happened exactly you may want to know? I never knew. We just did. I could no longer bear the fire, staunch the anger. For a while, I moved like a shadow in his wake. But that angered him. “Alone. Alone, you understand?”he would mock, and I would nod, I understood. We needed to be alone to recognize that we were always alone.

That was all so long ago. Here I stand. I met a beautiful friend. One who comforted my loss, and was gentle always. I stand awed in her shadow, miserable to speak most of the time yet unable to leave the silent words unsaid. My sun? We are apart now. Too far to speak, too little to say if we do. But there he stands…perhaps more than me, the only one who life was not an imagination. The sky hopes we meet again. As I, wait to rise, watching the blue ink spread across the sky, I wonder if we ever did.

Memory Sauce

Of a Pebble

Wednesday, May 27, 2009

More rehashing. I bought some trousers yesterday, after going to four different shops, and trying on at least 50 pairs! Why don't they make trousers in labels rather than sizes? Like here : a trouser for you - moody, irascible, sarcastic, with Indian legs, and an universal mind. Or why doesn't someone invent a trouser-cloning machine? Imagine the best-fitting, most comfortable trousers you have - and imagine just putting it into a machine, computing different colors, and get the same, lovely fit? Sigh. I dream.

Here's back to the rehashing:

A cool breeze surrendered to the lake its whispers of fate. Standing alone against a sky that beamed dark, H felt its coolness. The kiss of the lake licking her toes. There were no fish here. They had left a while. Long ago, when she was innocent of ways, and trusting in the universe, she remembered playing here with her cousin, L. They were inseparable, L and her. Where was L now, she wondered. Strange how time can dull the strongest, and dim the faintest to an obscure path on your memory. Would she be alive? H thought. Did it even matter? Perhaps not. Curiosity was never one of her strongest traits anyway.

The first drops of rain spattered against the rocks lining the lake. Or maybe, they weren’t even rocks, they were pebbles, she mused. It was one of those beautiful evenings that would make you awash again in life. H wondered if she should write a poem about it. The thought seemed absurd again. A dying person write a poem? It didn’t seem that history would be kind to such poets. Perhaps the rain would snatch it from her grasp, turn it over to the waiting lake. Paper turned to paper. Ink flowing into the lake. Words left unsaid. Just as her life was.

It was cold now. Looking down, her feet had turned blue. Now. Now is the time she thought, looking at the rippling waters of the rain-touched lake. It was then that she saw it. A pebble. A utterly smooth round pebble. Where did that come from, she wondered. All her life she had hunted for such a pebble. But these rough lands had never yielded anything so smooth. Only jagged edges that seemed to almost curse their sharpness. Twist, turn the cruelty inside you to the outside. Aye, that was the nature of this land.

Yet here it was. The most beautiful pebble she had ever seen. White shimmering off its surface. Cold to the touch. She looked at it in awe. Was it a sign, H wondered. Then the absurdity of that thought made her double up in laughter. Now. Now, she knew what to do. Miracles existed. This stone told her all that she didn’t know about life - hope exists. Miracles happen. The unexpected is not always a source of pain. That dreams can touch the rock of reality even now. Even now when the sun has left a lonely glow across the aching sky. Yes, now she knew what to do. The wind was howling now. Beseeching her, it seemed. She turned back, walked away from the lake, back towards the car. The doors were open, flailing wildly in the wind. Humming a song, she kept the pebble lovingly, tenderly on the passenger seat. Lie safe there my love, she murmured. It seemed alive then. Did it blink, she wondered? Carve your own journey now, she told the pebble. Hope. Love. Care. Act all through life as if these exist. Pretend to mock deceptions. Be a deception. Be smooth as you are. Let no knife tear you to jagged corners. Be a stone, she smiled. The pebble seemed to pause, almost turn around in its seat…but she was gone.

With a joyful cry that mocked the skies that cradled the dead sun that created all this life below, she was gone. Into the lake. Into its deepest bosom. Through its darkest depth. The wind stopped. The pebble lay dead. But she, H, was alive.

Cut the Cake

Tuesday, May 26, 2009

I am rehashing some old stuff I wrote here. Kinda appropriate considering my birthday is coming. The Big 30s! Here I come!

Cut the cake, cut the cake,

Chants hit the wall across

An eternity of shame

She didn’t know the words

Didn’t know the tunes

That wafted through a silly

Mindless game.

Somehow it seemed it were to end.

The loss of ignominy.

The end of embarrassment.

But in the spectres that run her mind, they stayed.

Cut the cake, cut the cake.

Cut the damn cake, will ya?

Shoot the candles, dim the light.

A reminder of a day when birth seemed death.

Touchocolate

This blog is now my last desperate means of self-expression. After having fallen into a pitiful mould of self-pity, cynicism and sarcasm, all of which is directed solely at me, my unfortunate soul, and my laboring mind, I thought I would pay heed to some well-meaning friends who have goaded me to write. Write, they said. And after the day is dusted, and time's minutes have ventured into obscurity, write is what I am doing. I am not sure what I will write here.

Do I bare my soul? But then, it barely squeaks as it is half the time. Do I spill out the guts of my inner thoughts, the spindly leaves of moments that have turned into the past here? I don't know. Much as I can say in my life right now, I don't know.

But I am trying to take a step here. Perhaps, the accident that left me in bed for almost two weeks now has given me fresh fluidity of thinking into a muscled mass of congealed blood that I can call my feelings over the past few years. I am a zombie, but through this open diary, I am reaching out to that one person I know can set me right - if right was wrong, that is - and that is me. The title of this post is just that - touch chocolate - and sometimes you might find, that it just melts. I hope I do too.
